ܘܗܘܐ ܕܟܕ ܣܐܒ ܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܥܒܕ ܠܒܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܕܝܢ̈ܐ ܥܠ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ

When Samuel was old, he made his sons judges over Israel.

ܘܗܘܐ ܫܡ ܒܪܗ ܒܘܟܪܗ ܝܘܐܝܠ ܘܫܡ ܬܢܝܢܗ ܐܒܝܐ ܕܝܢ̈ܐ ܒܒܪܫܒܥ
whw' shm brh bwkrh yw'yl wshm thnynh 'by' dyn' bbrshbe
Now the name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah. They were judges in Beersheba.

ܘܠܐ ܗܠܟܘ ܒ̈ܢܘܗܝ ܒܐܘܪ̈ܚܬܗ ܘܐܨܛܠܝܘ ܒܬܪ ܢܟܠܐ ܘܢܣܒܘ ܫܘܚܕܐ ܘܨܠܘ ܕܝܢܐ
wl' hlkw bnwhy b'wrkhthh w'tsTlyw bthr nkl' wnsbw shwkhd' wtslw dyn'
His sons didn’t walk in his ways, but turned away after dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice.

ܘܐܬܟܢܫܘ ܟܠܗܘܢ ܣ̈ܒܐ ܕܒܢ̈ܝ ܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܘܐܬܘ ܠܘܬ ܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܠܪܡܬܐ
w'thknshw klhwn sb' dbny 'ysryl w'thw lwth shmw'yl lrmth'
Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together and came to Samuel to Ramah.

ܘܐܡܪܘ ܠܗ ܗܐ ܐܢܬ ܣܐܒܬ ܘܒܢܝ̈ܟ ܠܐ ܡܗܠܟܝܢ ܒܐܘܪ̈ܚܬܟ ܗܫܐ ܗܒ ܠܢ ܡܠܟܐ ܕܢܕܘܢܢ ܐܝܟ ܟܠܗܘܢ ܥܡ̈ܡܐ
w'mrw lh h' 'nth s'bth wbnyk l' mhlkyn b'wrkhthk hsh' hb ln mlk' dndwnn 'yk klhwn emm'
They said to him, “Behold, you are old, and your sons don’t walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”

ܘܐܬܒܐܫ ܦܬܓܡܐ ܒܥܝܢ̈ܘܗܝ ܕܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܟܕ ܐܡܪܘ ܠܗ ܗܒ ܠܢ ܡܠܟܐ ܕܢܕܘܢܢ ܐܝܟ ܟܠܗܘܢ ܥܡ̈ܡܐ ܘܨܠܝ ܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܩܕܡ ܡܪܝܐ
w'thb'sh pthgm' beynwhy dshmw'yl kd 'mrw lh hb ln mlk' dndwnn 'yk klhwn emm' wtsly shmw'yl qdm mry'
But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” Samuel prayed to Yahweh.

ܘܐܡܪ ܡܪܝܐ ܠܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܫܡܥ ܒܩܠܗ ܕܥܡܐ ܠܟܠ ܕܐܡܪܝܢ ܠܟ ܡܛܠ ܕܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܠܟ ܐܣܠܝܘ ܐܠܐ ܠܝ ܐܣܠܝܘ ܕܠܐ ܐܡܠܟ ܥܠܝܗܘܢ
w'mr mry' lshmw'yl shme bqlh dem' lkl d'mryn lk mTl dl' hw' lk 'slyw 'l' ly 'slyw dl' 'mlk elyhwn
Yahweh said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in all that they tell you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me as the king over them.

ܐܝܟ ܟܠ ܥܒ̈ܕܐ ܕܥܒܕܘ ܡܢ ܝܘܡܐ ܕܐܣܩܬ ܐܢܘܢ ܡܢ ܐܪܥܐ ܕܡܨܪܝܢ ܘܥܕܡܐ ܠܝܘܡܢܐ ܘܫܒܩܘܢܝ ܘܦܠܚܘ ܠܐ̈ܠܗܐ ܐܚܪ̈ܢܐ ܗܟܢܐ ܗܢܘܢ ܥܒܕܝܢ ܘܐܦ ܠܟ
'yk kl ebd' debdw mn ywm' d'sqth 'nwn mn 're' dmtsryn wedm' lywmn' wshbqwny wplkhw l'lh' 'khrn' hkn' hnwn ebdyn w'p lk
According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, in that they have forsaken me and served other gods, so they also do to you.

ܘܗܫܐ ܫܡܥ ܒܩܠܗܘܢ ܒܪܡ ܡܣܗܕܘ ܣܗܕ ܒܗܘܢ ܘܚܘܐ ܐܢܘܢ ܢܡܘܣܗ ܕܡܠܟܐ ܕܡܡܠܟ ܥܠܝܗܘܢ
whsh' shme bqlhwn brm mshdw shd bhwn wkhw' 'nwn nmwsh dmlk' dmmlk elyhwn
Now therefore, listen to their voice. However, you shall protest solemnly to them, and shall show them the way of the king who will reign over them.”

ܘܐܡܪ ܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܟܠܗܘܢ ܦܬܓܡ̈ܘܗܝ ܕܡܪܝܐ ܠܥܡܐ ܕܫܐܠܘ ܡܢܗ ܡܠܟܐ
w'mr shmw'yl klhwn pthgmwhy dmry' lem' dsh'lw mnh mlk'
Samuel told all Yahweh’s words to the people who asked him for a king.

ܘܐܡܪ ܗܢܐ ܢܗܘܐ ܢܡܘܣܗ ܕܡܠܟܐ ܕܡܡܠܟ ܥܠܝܟܘܢ ܒܢܝ̈ܟܘܢ ܢܕܒܪ ܘܢܥܒܕ ܠܗ ܒܡܪ̈ܟܒܬܗ ܘܒܦܪ̈ܫܘܗܝ ܘܢܪܗܛܘܢ ܩܕܡ ܡܪ̈ܟܒܬܗ
w'mr hn' nhw' nmwsh dmlk' dmmlk elykwn bnykwn ndbr wnebd lh bmrkbthh wbprshwhy wnrhTwn qdm mrkbthh
He said, “This will be the way of the king who shall reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them as his servants, for his chariots and to be his horsemen; and they will run before his chariots.

ܘܢܥܒܕ ܠܗ ܪ̈ܒܝ ܐ̈ܠܦܐ ܘܪ̈ܒܝ ܡܐ̈ܘܬܐ ܘܪ̈ܒܝ ܚܡܫܝܢ ܘܪ̈ܒܝ ܥܣܪܐ ܘܢܕܒܪܘܢ ܕܒܪܗ ܘܢܚܨܕܘܢ ܚܨܕܗ ܘܢܥܒܕܘܢ ܡܐ̈ܢܝ ܩܪܒܗ ܘܡܐ̈ܢܝ ܡܪ̈ܟܒܬܗ
wnebd lh rby 'lp' wrby m'wth' wrby khmshyn wrby esr' wndbrwn dbrh wnkhtsdwn khtsdh wnebdwn m'ny qrbh wm'ny mrkbthh
He will appoint them to him for captains of thousands and captains of fifties; and he will assign some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest; and to make his instruments of war and the instruments of his chariots.

ܘܒܢ̈ܬܟܘܢ ܢܕܒܪ ܠܙܩܪ̈ܬܐ ܘܠܛܚ̈ܢܬܐ ܘܠܐ̈ܦܝܬܐ

He will take your daughters to be perfumers, to be cooks, and to be bakers.

ܘܚ̈ܩܠܬܟܘܢ ܘܟܪ̈ܡܝܟܘܢ ܘܙܝ̈ܬܝܟܘܢ ܛܒ̈ܐ ܢܣܒ ܘܢܬܠ ܠܥܒ̈ܕܘܗܝ
wkhqlthkwn wkrmykwn wzythykwn Tb' nsb wnthl lebdwhy
He will take your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, even your best, and give them to his servants.

ܘܙܪܥܟܘܢ ܘܟܪ̈ܡܝܟܘܢ ܢܥܣܪ ܘܢܬܠ ܠܡܗܝ̈ܡܢܘܗܝ ܘܠܥܒ̈ܕܘܗܝ
wzrekwn wkrmykwn nesr wnthl lmhymnwhy wlebdwhy
He will take one tenth of your seed and of your vineyards, and give it to his officers and to his servants.

ܘܥܒ̈ܕܝܟܘܢ ܘܐܡ̈ܗܬܟܘܢ ܘܓܕܘ̈ܕܝܟܘܢ ܫܦܝܪ̈ܐ ܘܚܡܪܟܘܢ ܢܕܒܪ ܘܢܥܒܕ ܥܒܕܗ
webdykwn w'mhthkwn wgdwdykwn shpyr' wkhmrkwn ndbr wnebd ebdh
He will take your male servants, your female servants, your best young men, and your donkeys, and assign them to his own work.

ܘܥܢܟܘܢ ܢܥܣܪ ܘܐܢܬܘܢ ܬܗܘܘܢ ܠܗ ܥܒ̈ܕܐ
wenkwn nesr w'nthwn thhwwn lh ebd'
He will take one tenth of your flocks; and you will be his servants.

ܘܬܝܠܠܘܢ ܒܝܘܡܐ ܗ̇ܘ ܡܢ ܩܕܡ ܡܠܟܟܘܢ ܕܓܒܝܬܘܢ ܠܟܘܢ ܘܠܐ ܢܥܢܝܟܘܢ ܡܪܝܐ ܒܝܘܡܐ ܗ̇ܘ
wthyllwn bywm' hw mn qdm mlkkwn dgbythwn lkwn wl' nenykwn mry' bywm' hw
You will cry out in that day because of your king whom you will have chosen for yourselves; and Yahweh will not answer you in that day.”

ܘܠܐ ܨܒܘ ܥܡܐ ܠܡܫܡܥ ܒܩܠܗ ܕܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܘܐܡܪܘ ܠܗ ܠܐ ܗܟܢܐ ܐܠܐ ܡܠܟܐ ܢܗܘܐ ܥܠܝܢ
wl' tsbw em' lmshme bqlh dshmw'yl w'mrw lh l' hkn' 'l' mlk' nhw' elyn
But the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel; and they said, “No, but we will have a king over us,

ܘܢܗܘܐ ܐܦ ܚܢܢ ܐܝܟ ܟܘܠܗܘܢ ܥܡ̈ܡܐ ܘܢܕܘܢܢ ܡܠܟܢ ܘܢܦܘܩ ܩܕܡܝܢ ܘܢܬܟܬܫ ܬܟܬܘܫܢ
wnhw' 'p khnn 'yk kwlhwn emm' wndwnn mlkn wnpwq qdmyn wnthkthsh thkthwshn
that we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.”

ܘܫܡܥ ܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܟܠܗܝܢ ܡ̈ܠܘܗܝ ܕܥܡܐ ܘܡܠܠ ܐ̈ܢܝܢ ܩܕܡ ܡܪܝܐ
wshme shmw'yl klhyn mlwhy dem' wmll 'nyn qdm mry'
Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of Yahweh.

ܘܐܡܪ ܡܪܝܐ ܠܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܫܡܥ ܒܩܠܗܘܢ ܘܐܡܠܟ ܠܗܘܢ ܡܠܟܐ ܘܐܡܪ ܫܡܘܐܝܠ ܠܐܢܫܐ ܕܐܝܣܪܝܠ ܙܠܘ ܐܢܫ ܠܩܪܝܬܗ
w'mr mry' lshmw'yl shme bqlhwn w'mlk lhwn mlk' w'mr shmw'yl l'nsh' d'ysryl zlw 'nsh lqrythh
Yahweh said to Samuel, “Listen to their voice, and make them a king.” Samuel said to the men of Israel, “Everyone go to your own city.”
